25+ Creative Protest Signs From the Global Youth-Led Climate Change Strike

On Friday, September 20, 2019, millions of young people from around the world took action regarding our climate crisis. Students skipped school and made signs to protest the inaction of world leaders to address this dire situation. In total, there were more than 3,600 events planned for that day—the biggest turnout ever for the organizing group #FridaysforFuture.

The climate strike movement was started by 16-year-old Greta Thunberg. In August of 2018, she began protesting alone every Friday outside of the Swedish Parliament building in Stockholm. Since then, her dedication has inspired other kids to strike who are scared for their future on this planet.

Galvanized by anger and disappointment, people displayed signs that communicated just how fed up they were; specifically, how our world is rapidly shifting for the worse, and how those who have the power to effect change seem unwilling to do so.  Many signs were straightforward. Some kids held up posters stating simply, “I’m terrified.”

Other protest ephemera featured messages with a pop culture twist. One included a picture of Mean Girls Regina George stating, “Get in loser, we’re climate striking” and another was of Helen Lovejoy from The Simpsons exclaiming “Won’t somebody please think of the children?!” Both are classic sayings that have been used as an engaging and effective way to make the protestors’ feelings known—and encourage us to take action, too, because this is a big deal.
